Precisely 13 years ago when I was about to turn 22, a friend of mine gave me a book that started me on the accelerated path to business and entrepreneurship.

Some of my friends said that after reading that book I transformed into a Category 5 hurricane.

One virus that never infected me was fear of criticism and the need to be accepted. In fact, after going through three of my father’s bankruptcies from age 13 to 22, I had developed elephant skin and was immune to failure and the disapproval of others that results from thinking outside of the box.

My life was all about survival, up until that point. I had worked every day of my life since the age of 13; first, as a babysitter, then a basketball coach, a clothing salesperson, a deck painter, flyer distributer, food deliverer, security worker, and even as a waiter for one shift (got fired quickly).

My fear of not having enough to eat started when I was 13 and the electricity bills weren’t paid, and when the phones got disconnected. It continued when at times we didn’t have money for fuel.

There was simply no time to waste. I had to get out of the rut. I was working crazy hours, though. For 3 years, I worked seven days a week, 10-12 hours per day, without vacations.

When I was doing security, I sat and read in the booth. I read so many books that in my head, I already knew that a breakthrough was on the horizon, since the wealthy individuals I was speaking to wanted to consult with me on matters of investments and business.

In 2009, I was one of the lucky ones that re-entered the real estate market in the U.S. early on, and my niche was buying and selling vacant homes.

I was 25 and finding 4-5 homes a day, out of which I was able to strike a deal with the absentee owners about 1%-2% of the time. It was a numbers game. With about 2-3 deals per month and an average profit of a few thousand dollars a pop, I grew the business to 5 cities.

Relationships were at the heart of the business and to this day, I can tell you that nothing spells out wealth like the ability to deal with people.

Forget Ivy League schools and any other academic courses or professions in which you are trained. Money – the BIG money in life – rests on your ability to work harmoniously with people and to successfully delegate where you’re mediocre.

Just as it did early on, before I’d developed what I consider to be effective habits, each day requires the mental effort to be disciplined and use my will power to direct my emotions and my logic to think, act, and behave in constructive ways.

    There’s no magic to it. It’s excruciating work, but I am fully aware of its significance to success. Each day contains countless ways of getting distracted.

    Millions of people engage in the same line of work as you do. There’s no doubt that skill will determine much concerning the fees you’ll be able to charge for your services, or the salary you’ll negotiate with your employer.

    I want to urge you to go on a journey of self-discovery, assessing your own psyche and reaching a point in your mind that eliminates all self-limiting beliefs regarding what’s possible for you.

    Form the vision of your life that you desire, pursue it and become a Category 5 hurricane. Don’t demolish all in your path, but build winning relationships. The storm is the inner drive needed to overcome the brainwashing society places on us to make us feel like we’re only average. We’re not, but it’s up to each of us to prove our own uniqueness.
