An Open Heart
On Tuesday, I saw my 30th consecutive live NBA championship series. Ever since I was seven years old, watching Michael win his first, playing against Magic and the Lakers, I haven’t missed one playoffs and I watch the finals live.
Basketball is by far my favorite sport, not only because I competed in it for twelve years, attempting to reach the professional level myself, but because it is a pure joy to watch.
Basketball is a game, which brings players to their mental limits; to play at your highest level, your mind needs to be focused on the present, and the game requires leadership skills, composure, finesse and focus.
Not many people know this, but the losing team, the Phoenix Suns, have a special coach named Monty Williams.
At age 18, at the prime of his college career, the doctor straight up told him that if he continued to play, he would surely die. Before his 2nd year at Notre Dame University, the medical staff found a heart problem during a routine check-up.
In the early 1980s, most people who had this heart condition would not be diagnosed with it, and the first time their families would learn about its existence would be at the funeral.
In his final year of high school, Monty posted an average of 30 pts and 16 rebounds/game; he was a phenom, but sat out for two years after learning about his disease. He became depressed, considered quitting his studies and even turned suicidal. His girlfriend (later wife) Ingrid was his lifeline, for real.
Ingrid gave him strength and prayed for him, as he kept risking his life and playing. Two years later, the doctors conducted twelve hours of check-ups and cleared Monty for the NBA!
Fast forward to 2016, long after Monty was forced to quit basketball, due to a chain of knee injuries and after he was fired from several coaching jobs. His wife was driving her car, when a woman on drugs, with a dog on her lap, crashed her car into the Williams’ vehicle, causing Ingrid to die from her injuries.
Monty was now a widower with five children from Ingrid.

Monty Williams went to the Bucks’ locker room after the loss and congratulated them on an historic championship and thanked them for making him a better coach.
His eulogy to his wife included condolences to the family of the Donaldsons, whose family member was the drugged-up woman who killed Ingrid. Monty is inspirational and has overcome so much through his attitude in life. You can find his eulogy on YouTube, as well as many other details about his life.
The point is that he never allowed life to defeat him. Wall Street is designed to beat you in the same way; its design is to manipulate your thinking that the stock market is too difficult to crack, but you should never, ever quit!
