Two weeks ago, when I was in France, in the village of Valmorel, my wife and I took the chairlift up the mountain. As we got off it, in front of us were two attractions: (1) a paragliding slope, where you ski for 10 meters and then you’re in the air, gliding above the ski terrain and, (2) a zipline that is the longest in France and traverses to the next ridge over.
I told my wife that we should do it and now is probably the best time, because who knows if we’ll come back this way in the following days we have left at this resort, or if the weather would be so sunny.
A few minutes later, we were already harnessed and buckled in, ready to be sent at 65 MPH across the valley, ski gear and all.
Some things must be done on the spot or you’ll never get another chance to do them.
Russia’s need to secure Crimea is a matter of utmost importance to them. In the history of Russia, they have been conquered and defeated from that direction on numerous occasions and their war ideology makes no compromises on this point – they must control Crimea.
In 2014, they already mobilized and saw how a corrupt Ukraine folded and how Europe didn’t lift a finger. In 2022, Putin’s inner circle felt that because of demographics, they must finish the job now, since Russia’s age pyramid is the worst in the world, with China as the runner-up.

In the next 20 years, Russia’s population will continue to decline, while its elderly population retires. Its working-class demographics will diminish, lowering its tax revenues, which will negatively impact its military capabilities and the new wave of patriots ready to defend their country.
2022 for Russia was like that zipline decision for us: It’s now or never, since conditions could not be better, especially with the United States signaling that it is pulling away from the regions and demanding that other NATO members militarize and share in the burden and financial expenses of defending their borders.
Putin‘s administration attacked and, as we stand, nearly one year later, in the depths of the muddy season, when the initial deployment surprised everyone, except the people tracking NATO’s aggression, which provoked this, the two countries (Ukraine and Russia) are readying themselves for the final showdown in May.
Ukraine is getting weapons, training and funding from NATO and Russia is enlisting 500,000 new reserves, so this war is gearing up for a cruel battle this spring.
What are the nuclear ramifications possible?
- United States: American intelligence has made clear that Putin knows that they are aware of his location at all times.
If he tries anything against America, he would most likely not survive the attack himself. I would say that’s off the table.
- European rival nations: Boris Johnson, former PM of Great Britain recently revealed that Putin threatened them with nukes. I think that the Russians initially considered tactical strikes towards the countries that supplied weapons/equipment/funding to the Ukrainians, but that ship has sailed.
- Border nations: Putin could make it a point to show that if NATO has plans to attack from Poland, Sweden or Finland, they’ll face grave consequences.
I don’t think that’s out of the question…
- Ukraine: If, for any reason, the May onslaught fails and Russia must retreat or regroup, they may consider tactical nukes to make sure Ukraine’s leadership doesn’t dare go on the attack.
