So What if They Met?

Arthur John Priest wasn’t born into riches. In fact, his job was one of the least favorable a man could have. He was a stoker. Many people today are scared that their job and profession will vanish from the world, as more automation, robotics, A.I. and supercomputing makes many occupations redundant, but Arthur Priest’s job was a sweaty hell that no man ought to be doing for a living.

A stoker worked in the underbelly of a coal ship. Those big vessels needed stokers to constantly feed the furnaces that created the heat needed to steam the engines.

For weeks on end, his job would consist of breathing these toxic coal fumes and making sure to carefully watch heat levels in the bowels of the ship.

It’s hard enough to keep active in this line of work, but Arthur Priest also endured collisions and sunken ship ordeals in his career. His bad luck was evident.

For one, he was part of the RMS Asturias, which sailed from England to Argentina in 1907 and collided with an object and had to be towed for repair. A decade later, after Priest had left its crew, it was flooded and abandoned.

The RMS Olympic, another ship on which he was a stoker, was massive and difficult to steer. It crashed into a smaller vessel in 1911, with Priest on board, but he survived it.

The Titanic was Priest’s next job and that marvel of the sea, with 29 boilers, 150 stokers and 850 tons of coal burned daily, hit an iceberg on April 14th 1912. Somehow, Arthur Priest made it from his barracks to the top, jumped into the freezing Atlantic Ocean and swam to a lifeboat!

Only 44 out of the 150 stokers survived the Titanic.

He continued to press his luck and with the HMS Alcantara, he suffered another collision and survived, before working on the Britannic, made by the same manufacturer as the Titanic. On November 21st 1916, it sunk after hitting a mine, but because of the safety measures taken this time around, 1,036 out of the 1,066 on board made it out.

No one wanted to work with Arthur John Priest after that; he was nicknamed “The Unsinkable Stoker” and retired.

Working as a stoker paid $30/month and didn’t make Mr. Priest rich at all. Literally every year of his life, he was part of a major issue at sea—that’s what I call a poor risk/reward career.

In the stock market, we do the opposite: The RISK we take is low and the reward is HUGE.

The market is up nearly 75% of the time, but in order to LOWER the risk and enhance and accelerate your reward, you must take full advantage of the big drops.

For Arthur Priest to survive these collisions and sunken ship incidents, he had to be prepared with an escape plan… seeing others scream and panic, he could not afford to participate in their mania; he had to stay calm, collected, and act.

Today, it looks like no Democratic candidate wants to run in 2024, because they feel this presidency has gone so horribly wrong that they have no hope in the midterms.

Inflation looks to be entrenched and we have many serious issues we’re grappling with, yet these are precisely the times when the next 10-baggers and 20-baggers are created.

Getting rich in the stock market is much more about buying aggressively on the dips than about anything else.
